Q: Who gets hired by cruise lines?
A: Career-changers, occasionally students for seasonal jobs.

Q: How old do I have to be?
A: You must be at least 18 years old to apply; 21 for the USA; it can be nationally regulated.

Q: What is the most common background experience of employees?
A: Hospitality industry: hotels - ***** at least, restaurants, bars, etc.

Q: Do the employees have to be able to speak English?
A: Yes, English is a must. Additional languages are a benefit.

Q: Do people with previous experience in the cruise industry have an advantage?
A: Yes, the cruise lines prefer them. They usually get job faster.

Q: How will I get to the ship?
A: Cruise lines will provide transportation to and from ship to nearest port.

Q: How much do the employees earn?
A: The tipping personnel earn from $1000 up to $4000 USD per month (that's including the tips). The non-tipping personnel’s salary depends on the level in the hierarchy.

Q: How long are the contracts?
A: The minimum contract is 3 months; there are longer contracts of 6 months to a year for employees renewing their first initial 3-month contract, depending on the schedule you have to keep.

Q: How long is a working day on cruise ships?
A: 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Q: Do I have to pay for my living expenses?
A: Room and board are provided for free by the cruise line. Very small cabins, shared by 2 to 4 employees. Some cabins have a TV set. Crew share bathrooms.

Q: Can I apply with a friend?
A: Yes but there is no guarantee that you will be hired both.

Q: Can I bring my children?
A: Unfortunately you cannot.

Q: Can I leave the ship at some point?
A: While the ship is docked at various ports you are off duty, you may go sightseeing, to the beach, shopping, etc.

Q: Do I have to wear a uniform?
A: Yes, uniforms are provided at not cost.

Q: What happens if I get ill when working on a cruise liner?
A: You get free medical help on board.

Q: Who pays for the plane ticket from my home to the port?
A: Usually the ship owner.
